Westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Newtonville are expected to reopen by approximately 4 p.m. Monday afternoon following a collision that sent two people to hospital, including one who was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre.

Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the collision at about 10:27 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, in the area of Newtonville.

According to police, an eastbound vehicle lost part of its tire assembly while travelling on Highway 401. The debris crossed the median and entered the westbound lanes, where it struck an SUV.

Two occupants of the SUV were transported to an area hospital. One person was later airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre for further medical treatment.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were initially closed as emergency crews responded to the crash. Shortly afterward, the westbound lanes were also closed to allow for the investigation and cleanup.

The eastbound lanes have since reopened, while westbound traffic remained closed through the afternoon.

OPP later confirmed that the injured passenger’s condition had improved and was upgraded to non-life threatening.

All westbound lanes are expected to be reopened by 4 p.m., according to police.
