Northumberland OPP – Staff Member Assaulted at Warkworth Institution

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an assault at Warkworth Institution.

On July 10, 2026, shortly after 5:00 p.m., police received a report that a staff member had been assaulted by an inmate at the facility.

The member of staff was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

This investigation is on-going and updates will be provided when available.

The OPP and Correctional Service Canada (CSC) work in close partnership to maintain the safety and security of correctional institutions and surrounding communities. This collaboration includes proactive measures to prevent the introduction of contraband, thorough investigations when incidents occur, and enforcement of applicable laws.

Together, CSC and the OPP are committed to protecting staff, inmates, and the public by addressing activities that threaten institutional safety, including the trafficking of illicit substances.

Correction Services Canada Press Release

On July 10, 2026, a staff member was assaulted at Warkworth Institution, a medium-security federal institution. The injured staff member was evaluated and treated at an outside hospital.

The assailant has been identified. The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.
