The refreshment tent operated by the Cobourg Lions Club closed earlier than planned on Saturday evening (June 27) during the Cobourg Waterfront Festival after volunteers determined it had become overcrowded.
Incoming Lions Club President Dave Cunningham said members staffing the tent in Victoria Park noticed the growing crowd at approximately 9 p.m. and made the decision to stop operations as a precaution.
“The Lions Club made the decision and we stopped serving and selling tickets,” said Cunningham.
He emphasized that the closure was a proactive measure taken by the club and not the result of any disturbances.
“We took the initiative, but police were called strictly to help. There were no incidents and the Lions were grateful for the assistance of Cobourg Police.”
The decision allowed volunteers to safely manage the large number of patrons while ensuring the evening concluded without incident.
The Cobourg Waterfront Festival continues on Sunday, with the Lions Club refreshment tent and festival activities scheduled to operate through July 1, 2026.
