Cobourg’s St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Thunder won their opening game as host of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) girls ‘A/AA’ hockey championship Tuesday, edging St. Mark High School from the Ottawa area 2-1 in a morning game at the CCC Bowl Arena.

Brielle Osborne and Evalina Butchart scored for No. 9 seed St. Mary in the win while Maeve Aird, Stella Howe and Brynn O’Leary drew assists. Goaltender Kennedy Bick earned the win in net over No. 6 St. Mark.

The round-robin pool play schedule continued in the afternoon and the Thunder dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 4 Georgian Bay District Secondary School at the Baltimore Recreation Centre.

Aird tallied the lone St. Mary goal with assists by Addison Morris and Butchart. The Thunder trailed 2-0 after two periods before Aird’s goal cut the deficit to one.

OFSAA games are also being played at the Jack Burger Sports Complex in Port Hope.

St. Mary has a big matchup against No. 15 ESC Theriault from Timmins Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at the CCC Bowl.
