Quick Response by the Belleville Fire and Emergency Services Contains Kitchen Fire

In Local

The Belleville Fire and Emergency Services – Fire Prevention Division is currently investigating a structure fire that occurred today in a single-family dwelling located on Edward Street.

Firefighters responded swiftly to the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze containing the fire to the kitchen area. Their rapid and professional suppression efforts prevented the fire from spreading throughout the home and to neighboring buildings. All occupants safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of fire crews, and fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Damaged estimated to be approximately $250,000.

“Belleville Fire and Emergency Services is proud of our team’s quick response and effective actions, which minimized property damage and exposure to neighbouring buildings” said Deputy Chief Mark Shannon.

As we celebrate the holidays, we would like to take this opportunity to remind the community about key fire safety practices:

1. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan: Ensure everyone in your household knows two ways out of every room and a designated meeting place outside.

2. Test and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Test alarms monthly, replace batteries as needed, and ensure you have working alarms on every level of your home.

3. Cook with caution. Never leave cooking unattended, especially during holiday meals. Keep flammable items away from the stovetop and create a kid-free zone of at least three feet around cooking areas.
