Letter to the Editor/Mayor – Concerns Over Warming Hub at New Golden Plough

In Letter to Editor, Local, News

Dear Mayor Cleveland,
I am writing to urgently express the profound concern and frustration many Cobourg residents feel about the proposed warming hub at the New Golden Plough Lodge site. The plan to place individuals struggling with drug addiction in close proximity to our vulnerable seniors is both dangerous and unacceptable. This approach blatantly disregards the safety and dignity of some of our most vulnerable citizens.

Countless community members have voiced that combining these populations exposes seniors to unnecessary risks, creating an unsafe environment that could lead to harm or distress. The lack of a clear, separate accommodation plan for these distinct groups is deeply troubling and reflects poorly on the town’s responsibility to protect all residents. Northumberland County has been dragging it feet on this issue with the hope that Cobourg would cave to pressure. Other municipalities need to share this responsibility.

I strongly urge you to immediately reconsider this plan and prioritize solutions that ensure strict separation between seniors and those with addiction challenges. Our seniors deserve facilities where they are safe and respected, and it is Northumberland County responsibility to provide this. Please take this feedback seriously and act swiftly.

Sincerely,

David Toulmin

Cobourg Resident
