Cobourg Police Service Wraps Up August STEP Focused on Intersection Safety

In Police Blotter

The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has concluded its August Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which aimed to improve intersection safety throughout the community.

Throughout August, CPS officers increased enforcement and public education efforts targeting high-risk behaviours at intersections, including failing to stop at red lights or stop signs, rolling stops, and failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and other vehicles. These violations pose serious risks to all road users.

Results from the August STEP initiative include:

Disobey Stop Sign – 28 tickets, 13 warnings

Fail to Stop – Red Light – seven (7) tickets, one (1) warning

Failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians or other vehicles – one (1) ticket, one (1) warning

Drive Wrong Way – five (5) tickets, four (4) warnings

Disobey Sign – four (4) tickets

Fail to Stop for Emergency Vehicle – three (3) tickets

Numerous other tickets and warnings issued for other offences

This initiative is part of CPS’s ongoing commitment to Vision Zero, a strategy aimed at eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all.

As the August STEP concludes, CPS reminds all road users to stay alert, obey traffic signals, and approach intersections with caution. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can make Cobourg’s roads safer for everyone.
