Video – Photo Gallery – Tourists Flock to Port Hope for the Salmon Run

Salmon aren’t the only thing along the Ganaraska River in Port Hope.

Tourists are flocking to the area looking at the annual salmon run taking place.

The shallow waters of the Ganaraska River make it a perfect spot to view the salmon making their way up the river.

One woman from New Brunswick just happened to stop in Port Hope for lunch and another customer it was a must-see to catch the salmon run.

She told Today’s Northumberland she was absolutely thrilled seeing all the salmon in the river as it was on her “bucket list.”

Once at Corbett’s dam, there is a fish ladder which if the salmon find it will take them up beyond the dam.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry/Lake Ontario Management Unit purchased a fish counter for the Ganaraska River several years ago to support the Atlantic Salmon program and provide valuable information on all migratory species in the river.

Over the last 30 days over 5,100 fish have made their way past the counter with 657 in the last 24-hours.
