In My Opinion – Cobourg Police Slowly Coming On Board with Communications

In Editorial

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, Cobourg Police did what is regularly done by other police services.

They released images of suspects involved in a distraction theft.

Unfortunately it took over two weeks since the crime took place to release the images.

On July 29, 2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m., three males attended a business in the area of Spring Street and King Street in Cobourg. One male distracted a staff member while the other two men took and concealed merchandise in their sweaters. They departed the store and left the area in a dark coloured sedan.

Police obtained CCTV footage and released the images on Thursday.

But it’s almost reprehensible that other crimes haven’t been reported in this community.

The Cobourg Police Services Board can do nothing as it’s an operational issue.

Today’s Northumberland has documented other crimes where a release hasn’t been issued.

Police have yet to release anything on a distraction theft in downtown Cobourg that happened on Sunday, June 9, 2025.

Just a day previous, it’s possible the same suspects struck a business in Port Hope.

It’s believed four women entered the store wearing masks and while two women distracted the clerk, two other women took numerous items.

The thefts amounted to thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.

The difference – Port Hope Police issued a release on Monday. Cobourg Police have yet to release any information or images on the suspects involved.

The big question – why?

Why should it take so long to inform the public?

The public are the eyes and ears of the police, but why aren’t Cobourg Police informing the public?

We shouldn’t have to commend the police for issuing a press release, but up until recently, press releases involving major thefts have been few and far between.

The release about the distraction theft is roughly two-weeks old, but at least it’s been released.

Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come from a department that has been severely lacking in communicating with the public they serve.
