Chemetron Lagoon Parking Lot and Waterfront Trail Partial Opening in Port Hope

In Local

The revitalization work being completed by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) at the Chemetron Lagoon (part of the Port Hope Area Initiative) is progressing well. We are excited to announce that the parking lot and access to the Waterfront Trail are now open for through-only access.

Due to the nature of the previous site – an industrial waste lagoon for a pigment production facility – the area remains under active monitoring to ensure it meets all safety and environment regulations. Testing and final site work will continue until approximately 2027.

The Municipality of Port Hope understands the community’s interest in the transformation of this space. Visitors are encouraged to check out the on-site signage for a glimpse of what’s to come, but please do not remove the black fabric from the fencing.

Once complete, the site will be a welcoming public park with walking trails, seating areas, native tree plantings, a sensory garden, and features that support bird and wildlife habitats. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and encourage respectful through-only use of the open portions.
