Three people from Brampton were rescued from the chilly waters of Lake Ontario by members of the Coast Guard on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Shortly before 8 p.m. emergency services, including Cobourg Police, Cobourg Fire, and Northumberland County Paramedics were dispatched to the east pier in Cobourg for reports of three people drifting out from Victoria Beach on three inflatable inner tubes.

With an off-shore wind, the adults had no chance of getting back to shore and were drifting further out onto the lake.

Members of the Canadian Coast Guard quickly responded to the rescue along with Cobourg Fire Chief Ellard Beaven and a number of individuals on his personal pontoon boat.

One by one the individuals were helped into the Coast Guard boat and transported to back to shore.

None of the people rescued were wearing life jackets.

All three were checked out by paramedics and other than being cold – were fine.

Immediately after the rescue off of Victoria Beach, members of the Coast Guard then attended a vessel in distress near Port Hope.

There are four life guard stations on Victoria Beach, but this is the second year they will not be manned.

When the life guard stations did have personnel, there were no inflatables allowed in the area of the beach.
