Northumberland OPP – Suspended Driver Charged with Impaired (Name Released)

Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged another driver with impaired driving while conducting traffic enforcement.

On Tuesday June 24, 2025, at approximately 12:50 a.m., police were conducting traffic enforcement on County Road 28 at Telephone Road. Officers observed a dark colored Honda sedan approach the intersection and complete a U-Turn at a clearly posted “No U-Turn” intersection. Officers stopped the black sedan on the highway 401 westbound on ramp. An Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand was made to which the driver complied by providing a sample of their breath. With the result, the accused was taken into custody and transported to the Cobourg OPP detachment for further testing. Through investigation, the individual was found to be suspended from driving under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

As a result of the investigation, Nivyan ABBASI (age 25) of Pickering Ontario, was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

·      Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

·      Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The individual was additionally charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with:

·      Drive while under suspension

·      Disobey sign

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on August 27, 2025.
