Transformer Explosion Ignites Several Vehicles in Port Hope

In Local

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to multiple calls of an explosion on Wednesday, May 8, 2025.

Multiple 9-1-1 calls were received stating the explosion was in the area of Hope Street South, just south of Peter Street around 10 p.m.

Fire Chief Jason Williams said, “upon arrival firefighters discovered a 44,000 V transformer at the incident location had exploded and subsequently caused fire to spread to several vehicles, parked below.”

Firefighters extinguished the fire without incident, and there are no reported injuries associated with the event.

The failure of the transformer caused a power outage in a large area of the municipality Port Hope.

Lexon was contacted and attended the location to ensure that the power was isolated to the transformer and repairs are being undertaken and a damage assessment at this time.
