A training exercise involving 31 Canadian Brigade Group of the Canadian Army Reserve from London, Ontario, took place over the weekend throughout Northumberland County.

The bulk of the training for the 800 CAF members took place on Saturday, April 27, 2025 throughout Northumberland County.

Members trained on the water and land and stayed at various arenas throughout the County overnight including in Baltimore and Bewdley.

The Reservists trained with members of the Hamilton Township Fire Department over the weekend.

Fire Chief Mike Robinson said fire crews worked with Reservists showing them the water capabilities the department has in rescuing victims from the water.

“What we’re showing them here are our capabilities, understanding that if we were to use the Canadian Armed Forces in any type of emergency, they are going to assist us.”

Along with training on shore, Reservists had the opportunity to be shown the department’s new water rescue boat called a UMA that can be used in all seasons throughout the year.

Robinson said the training was both beneficial to firefighters and the Reservists.

“They certainly are engaged and this is one of their big training exercises.”

With it being a cooler than normal Spring, Robinson adds for anglers and anyone on the water, it is strongly recommended to wear a personal floatation device at all times – it could save your life.
