Northumberland County recently welcomed members of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities (CANHC) for a visit that showcased the region’s infrastructure, economic development projects, and community assets.
CANHC represents a broad cross-section of communities with a common interest as a host (or potential host) of nuclear technology in Canada. By leveraging collective experiences, CANHC helps member communities build essential infrastructure while aligning with their local missions and visions. As Canada looks to expand its nuclear industry to support climate change mitigation efforts, and potentially the development of new nuclear in Port Hope, the role of CANHC will help with exploring and assisting with informed decision-making and resource-sharing.
During their visit, CANHC members held their official meeting at Venture13 in Cobourg and had the opportunity to explore key sites across the community such as the Ontario Agri-Food Venture Centre in Colborne, housing development and industrial parks in Cobourg, and Northumberland County infrastructure projects.
County Councillor Lucas Cleveland, who represents Northumberland County on the CANHC board, provided a guided tour, highlighting the County’s commitment to sustainable growth and innovation.
“With nuclear technology playing an increasingly important role in Canada’s clean energy future, it is essential for communities like ours to engage in meaningful discussions about its potential impact,” said Councillor Cleveland. “Hosting CANHC members allowed us to showcase the strengths of Northumberland County while learning from the experiences of other nuclear host communities. We look forward to continuing these conversations as we explore the possibilities for our region.”
With plans for new nuclear development on the horizon in Wesleyville in the Municipality of Port Hope, Northumberland County is proactively exploring the potential opportunities and challenges associated with hosting nuclear infrastructure. Engaging with CANHC provides valuable insights and connections to ensure informed discussions about the region’s future as a possible host for nuclear expansion.
