City of Kawartha Lakes OPP – Grenade Recovered at Bobcaygeon Residence

In Police Blotter

A grenade was located at a residence in the town of Bobcaygeon and was safely disposed of by members of the Military.

On February 26th at approximately 1:00 pm, the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP Detachment received a call regarding an elderly male.

The complainant immediately stepped away and advised the male that they were calling the police. OPP officers were dispatched to the location and took the male into custody to be transported to the hospital without incident.

During the investigation, a historical wartime grenade was discovered, along with other weaponry. OPP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was contacted who in turn consulted with the Department of National Defence.

OPP Officers evacuated the residents near by as a precaution and had the elementary school in the area placed on a hold and secure. After consulting with the EDU team, the hold and secure was lifted and the incident was isolated to the involved residence.

A Bomb Tech from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton attended, safely removed the grenade and took it for disposal. The other weaponry was seized by OPP officers.

The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP want to remind community members that if ever in a similar situation where weapons or explosives are located, do not attempt to dispose of them yourself. Contact the OPP immediately, move to a safe location and ensure that no one else gets close. EDU members are trained in the safe handling and disposal of explosives to ensure public safety.
