Cobourg Police – Edmonton Woman Facing Charges After Investigation Into Rental Scam (No Name Released)

A 22-year-old Edmonton woman is facing charges after an investigation into a rental scam.

In July 2024, police opened an investigation after receiving a report of a rental scam. It was reported that the victim transferred money and gift cards for a security deposit to someone posing as a landlord of a rental property in Cobourg. The accused provided a fraudulently signed lease agreement and rent receipt. The property was determined not to be available for rent.

On Monday, February 10, 2025, Canada Border Services contacted the Cobourg Police Service to advise they had detained a 22-year-old Edmonton woman at Pearson International Airport on the strength of the warrant held by the Service. Police attended and executed the warrant. The accused was charged with:

• Fraud Under $5,000 – section 380(1)(b) Criminal Code of Canada (CCC)

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 – section 354(1)(a) CCC

• Obtaining by False Pretense – section 362(1)(a) CCC

• Drawing Document Without Authority – section 374 CCC

• Misleading Receipt – section 388 CCC

The accused is being held for a bail hearing.
