Peterborough County OPP – Driver Who Stated They Had Consumed Mushrooms Charged with Impaired (Name Released)

Officers from the Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged an individual with the first impaired driving charge in 2025.

On Wednesday January 1, 2025, shortly before 8:30am, a 911 call was received by an individual stating his friend was ‘overdosing on mushrooms’. During the call, the individual who was the driver of their vehicle, admitted to also having consumed ‘mushrooms’.

Officers arrived on scene to find EMS already there and assessing one person. Officers approached the driver of the vehicle and after a brief conversation with the driver, the officer made a demand for the Approved Screening Device (ASD). The driver complied with the demand and provided a sample of their breath resulting in a reading of ‘Fail’, at which point they were arrested.

Kshitij RATHOUR (age 28) of Peterborough, ON., was arrested and charged with:

· Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused had their drivers licence suspended for 90-days, and their vehicle impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on January 28, 2025.

The Peterborough County OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, public transit, or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
