Video – Brookside Encampment Finally Being Removed

In Editor Choice, Local

The Brookside property which has been housing an encampment for 15-months in Cobourg is finally being cleaned up.

The property was sold by the Ontario government last week and the new owners installed a fence around the perimeter on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 and on Thursday four men, some working with bare hands cleared garbage which included, lawn mowers, propane tanks, skids, tents, tires, bicycle parts, chairs, couches, drug paraphernalia and much more.

Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland said immediately upon hearing the sale of the property located at 390 King Street East had been completed he called the new owners.

Cleveland said he’d met previously with the owners, but wanted to know their timeline for cleaning the property.

“Immediately the individual on the other end said, “Mayor, we will get started on it right away.”

True to the individuals word, the fence was installed and clean-up started on Thursday.

“I’ve heard one thing from the developers that they would do A and B and here we are two days later and both A and B was done – so I’d say that’s a good starting building a relationship.”
