Town of Cobourg Flags at Half-Staff for Firefighters’ National Memorial Day

The Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents that flags across all municipal buildings will be at half-staff on Sunday, September 8 in honour of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.

The Government of Canada established Firefighters’ National Memorial Day as a tribute to the Firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe. The second Sunday in September of each year is now designated in memory of Firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty.

Among the inductees being honoured this year will be Cobourg’s Donald Medhurst. Don was a
proud member of the Cobourg Fire Department for 30 years, rising through the ranks and
retiring as a Platoon Chief. His death in 2020 was the result of a work-related illness. His name
will be added to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall in Ottawa and the International
Association of Fire Fighters Memorial wall in Colorado Springs, Colorado later this September.

Don’s name was previously added to the Ontario Firefighters Memorial Wall in Toronto this
past Fall.

The Canadian flag will be at half-staff on all federal buildings and establishments and across
all Town of Cobourg municipal buildings on Sunday, September 8. Flags will return on
Monday, September 9.
