Cobourg Council Voices Support for Legion Village Development

At its June meeting Wednesday, Cobourg council authorized staff to prepare a letter stating their support for the expansion of Legion Village.

The request came from Executive Director Michael Eden, who said the expansion will provide affordable housing units for the most vulnerable seniors in Northumberland County. As they strive to get this work started, a letter reiterating council’s support is a requirement of the Federal and provincial grants they hope to apply for.

Eden spoke of meetings with the mayor and deputy mayor, and February’s application for a minor variance pending studies to be conducted.

There are currently 199 units, and the waiting list for them is eight to 10 years. The number should grow to some 367 housing units to be made available to those aged 65 and over.

Assisted living is offered, as are different levels of care. As Eden said, “we are a retirement community but not a retirement home.”
