In Editor Choice, Local

After a devastating fire consumed the only grocery store in Colborne on May 24, 2023 the company has announced they have no plans on rebuilding in the area.

People driving by the store on Toronto Road (Country Road 2) spotted the flames and called 9-1-1.

Cramahe Township Fire Department responding quickly and along with Brighton and Cobourg Fire Departments did their best to save the structure.

But the store and contents were destroyed in the fire.

Today’s Northumberland reached out to Sobey’s for an update and on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Sarah Dawson who is manager of corporate affairs stated in a e-mail the company has no plans to open another store in the community.

“As you know, last year, a fire caused significant damage to the Colborne Foodland forcing it to close indefinitely.

Unfortunately, reopening that store is not a viable option. There are many contributing factors that lead to a decision like this, and it was not taken lightly. Some teammates have already transitioned to other stores within our network, and we are committed to supporting remaining teammates as they transition to new opportunities. On behalf of the franchise owner and operator, we deeply appreciate the community’s longstanding support and patronage.”
