Peterborough Police Service – Incidents Include Theft from Vehicles, Fraud Scam, Assault Arrest (No Names Released)

Thefts from Vehicles Arrest

A 26-year-old Peterborough is facing charges in connection with several theft from vehicle incidents.

At approximately 7:05am on April 17 ,2024, officers received a call from a resident about a man rummaging through a vehicle on Perry Street.  Upon arrival, officers searched the area and located a man matching the description given to police. The man tried to run, but was taken into custody.  During a search after arrest, officers located numerous items, including a makeshift device believed to be used to break windows.

As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Theft under $5000 x4
  • Mischief under $5000 x4
  • Possession of Property obtained by crime under $5000 x4
  • Failure to Comply with a Probation Order x4

The accused was also wanted on a warrant and is currently bound by a probation order with the following condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court today, April 17, 2024.

Officers are currently going through the found items and reaching out to owners.  They have already returned items reported missing in two online reports from April 13, 2024.  The investigation is ongoing.

 

Fraud Scam Warning

The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a warning to homeowners to be aware of springtime scammers.

At this time of year, the Service often receives reports of paving / driveway sealant scams.  In these incidents, the scammers often say they have some leftover materials from another job and can fix or seal your driveway for cash.

Homeowners are reminded to:

  • Not pay for work up front
  • Only pay for completed work
  • Say no, if you’re unsure
  • Let someone you trust know about the deal and get a second opinion

Assault Arrest

Two people are facing charges after an incident Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 2:15pm on April 16, 2024, officers were called to the George Street South and Princess Street area about a fight at King Edward Park. Upon arrival, officers learned that there was an ongoing landlord/tenant dispute at a nearby address.  When the landlord spotted some suspicious activity move from his property to the park gazebo, he approached, at which time the suspects threw an item at him and then punched him and another bystander who attempted to help, breaking their glasses.  Officers took the two suspects into custody. During the arrest, officers seized a black replica handgun from the male suspect.

As a result of the investigation,

A 38-year-old Otonabee-South Monaghan man was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

A 36-year-old Otonabee-South Monaghan woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault x2
  • Mischief Under $ 5,000

Both accused were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court, May 7, 2024.
