Ryken’s Pond is Ready for the Second Annual Castleton Sports Club Children’s Fishing Derby

(apologies for audio with Jeff Turney – was a bit blustery out)

The pond is stocked and ready to go for the second annual Castleton Sports Club Children’s Fishing Derby at Ryken’s Pond in Cramahe Township.

Castleton Sports Club members Jeff Turney, Stacy King and Bruce Bond drove for over two hours to bring back approximately 250 rainbow trout that were 12-inches long.

But Turney says the pond was stocked with 250 fish last year and only 80 were caught, so there are still a lot left.

That became obvious when a scoop full of fish food was put into the water and immediately turned into a fish frenzy.

Fishing is open for anglers 14 and younger, but the event is always a family event with parents and grandparents coming out to enjoy the day.

Turney said Ryken’s Pond is the perfect place to have the event with being off the road just a bit and plenty of room for everyone.

There will be a raffle table and prize table with numerous prizes.

George Ryken who owns the property said the event started in 1989 by the Warkworth Service Club.

Ryken said he loves donating the property to see everyone enjoying themselves.

“It’s just great. When parents come up to me and say, “I brought my kids out because my dad brought me when I was a little kid.”

“So we’re on the second generation and it’s great to see them come back every year.”

The event takes place on May4/5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All funds raised from the event will go to the Castleton Sports Club.

For directions go north of Jakobi Road, north of Castleton and then take a right at Morganston Road.
