Two Notices to Vacate – 15 Days Later Encampment Still Remains in Cobourg

In Local

The Town of Cobourg said they have been aware of the encampment just north of the railway tracks on the west side of William Street since December 21, 2023.

Emergency services were dispatched to the encampment on Monday February 5, 2024 for a medical emergency.

Today’s Northumberland asked the town if and when they became aware of the encampment that has five propane tanks and a number of other items.

Municipality Law Officers (by-law) spoke with the individual and advised them of Town Bi-laws at that time.

The individual was provided with a notice to vacate. As is Town policy, staff contacted Northumberland County to connect the individual with social services.

Town official told Today’s Northumberland that, “after multiple attempts, Social Services were able to connect with the individual and have confirmed that services have been offered.”

“MLE revisited the property on January 30th and a second notice to vacate was issued.”

The individual was still present on February 5, however indicated to by-law that they were awaiting a ride.

“As of today (Tuesday, February 6, 2024), the person has vacated but an extension to remove belongings of importance was granted for friends or family to assist.
