The Dangers and Beauty of Ice in Bewdley and Cobourg

In Weather

Rice Lake appeared to be frozen – for the most part on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

With the fishing huts on the lake, snowmobiles and a couple out for a walk along with a family taking in a bit of hockey after clearing a spot of snow everything looks like it does every year.
But it isn’t.

There is a large section of ice that heaved leaving a section of open water visible from Bewdley Optimist Park.

In Cobourg it appears most of the harbour basin is frozen, but waterfowl including ducks, geese and swans appear to be more included to find the open section of water rather than on the ice.

And taking a stroll along the west breakwall discovers a wonderland of ice covering the trees and growth from the high winds of last week.

Ice has built up along the shoreline and beach, but it is extremely dangerous to venture out.

Winter brings a beautiful landscape, but it’s always best to keep a safe distance from open water and always remember – no ice is safe ice.
