SIU Investigating After Suspect Suffers Serious Injury While in Custody of Cobourg Police

The Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 22-year-old man suffered a serious injury while in custody of Cobourg Police Service officers on Monday.

Based on preliminary information at about 6 p.m. on Monday, officers were called to the area of Division and Chapel Streets in Cobourg for a report of a man who was threatening a woman and children in a vehicle.

Officers arrested the man, he was taken to the station and put in a cell.

The man complained of pain and he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a serious injury.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is investigating after an individual in police custody waiting for a bail hearing requests medical attention for an injury.

 

Cobourg Police
On Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, at 6:00pm, police responded to a call for a fight in the Town of Cobourg.

As a result of the police investigation, one individual was arrested and held for a show cause hearing. While in custody, the individual requested medical attention and was transported to a local hospital to be assessed.

The Cobourg Police Service has notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the incident, and it has invoked its mandate. As such, the Cobourg Police Service is unable to provide any further information. Any further inquiries should be directed to the SIU Communications.

 

Today’s Northumberland has learned the suspect was staying at Transition House and the incident happened in the municipal parking lot beside Trinity United Church located at Division and Chapel Streets.
