Buddy Bus Helping The Homeless in Cobourg

In Local

For the second night in a row, the Buddy Bus is helping the homeless at the encampment in Cobourg.

On Saturday, August 12, 2023 and Sunday, Jordan Stevenson brought his Buddy Bus to the bottom of Hibernia Street in Cobourg near where the encampment has up to 20 people.

Last week, Stevenson took a walk around the site and noticed a number of individuals that didn’t have tents so he offered up the Buddy Bus which is named after his dog.

“We figured this was as good a time as any to get out there and make sure we could put this to use.”

Stevenson within three hours of arriving they gave out food and a number of people have used the bus to rest up.

On Saturday a total of 17 people used the services of the Buddy Bus whether it was for resting, or for food. Over $100 was spent on pizzas on Saturday and early into Sunday morning.

On Sunday evening, it was up to $150 worth of food and snacks.

“So far the response has been very, very positive. Not only from the individuals using it, but people have been stopping by asking what it’s about and what it’s for.”

“We heard about what was happening at the beach with various individuals beyond that encampment.

Stevenson said having the Buddy Bus in the area of the encampment is a pilot project and will only be taking place until Monday morning at 7 a.m.

The pilot project will end on Monday morning because as Stevenson puts it, it’s still kind of a “grey area” with Cobourg municipal by-law.

“But we want to get all the roadblocks out of the way prior to winter.”
