Brampton Man Granted Full Parole After Serving 17-Months in Jail for the Deaths of Two Men Following Collision on Highway 401

A Brampton man who was responsible for the deaths of two men in a fiery crash on Highway 401 at Port Hope was released on full-parole in June 2023.

Baljinder Singh, age 61, was sentenced to three years in federal prison on July 8, 2021 after he plead guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death following a collision on Highway 401 in August 2017,

At the time Singh was operating a transport truck heading eastbound on Highway 401. Traffic had slowed due to construction, however Singh didn’t slow down and attempted to change lanes when his transport struck the victims vehicle. At the time of impact, Singh’s vehicle was estimated at a speed of 90 kph.

The sentencing judge imposed a five-year driving prohibition along two a three year jail term.

Singh was released on December 19, 2022 under the supervision of the Parole Office and resided with his son and daughter-in-law after spending 17-months in prison.

Victim Impact Statements presented to the Parole Board of Canada which reviewed Singh’s case by way of an “in-office review” had stated the, “ongoing pain and excruciating sense of loss” family members face.

The family members stated Singh doesn’t deserve full parole and said he should be deported.

At an Immigration Hearing that took place in April 2023, Singh did lose his refugee status which will permit his removal from Canada. Singh is currently seeking a judicial review on the decision.

A Statistical Information on Recidivism score indicated that 80% of offenders with a similar score will not score will not commit an indictable offence within three years of release.

Singh was granted full parole on June 12, 2023.
