Questions Remain As Onsite Police Investigation Wraps Up in Daycare Death of Two-Year-Old

The on-site investigation that lead to the death of a two-year-old at a day care centre on Thursday, May 25, 2023 is complete, but the investigation is far from over.

Emergency services were called shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday after a mother came to pick up her child and discovered her missing at Watch Me Grow Daycare on County Road 45, just south of Baltimore in Hamilton Township.

A frantic search took place around the playground, property and neighboring properties.

A short time later the lifeless body of the child was removed from a well.

Family, friends and the community are devastated what happened.

Northumberland OPP Crime Unit are leading the investigation along with Central Region Forensic Identification Services under the direction of the OPP’s Criminal Investigation Brand and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.

Police have interviewed a number of people with the investigation.

On Saturday and Sunday, people were still placing flowers at the day care centre.

By Sunday afternoon, the police tape had been removed and there were no vehicles on the property.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.

Allison Funeral Home posted the funeral arrangements for Vienna Rose Irwin on Sunday.

The obituary says that Vienna passed away tragically on Thursday.

Vienna was the beloved daughter of Claire and Clayton Irwin. Dear granddaughter of Debbie and Bill Irwin, Shari Russell (Late Magnus Einarsson). Adored niece to Amber (Brock Stephenson), Blake (Mikayla Allison) and Lauren (Travis Collins). Loving cousin to Keaton, Wyatt and Logan Stephenson. God daughter to Alisha Carr.

Great-granddaughter to Pat Russell and the late Bud (Charles) and Marilyn Bailey. Great niece to Greg Bailey (Lisa) and Jennifer Bailey. Vienna will be missed dearly by many cousins and extended family.

Visitation will be held at Allison Funeral Home, 103 Mill Street North, Port Hope on 30 May and 31 May 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm.

Funeral service will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, 33 Pine Street North, Port Hope, Thursday June 1, 2023 at 10am.
