Peterborough County OPP – Animal Cruelty Allegations Under Investigation

Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising the local community that allegations relating to a local animal rescue are under investigation by Animal Welfare Services (AWS).

Allegations of animal cruelty were brought forward to the Peterborough County OPP relating to a local animal rescue. AWS was immediately contacted and has commenced an investigation into the allegations. The OPP will collaborate with and provide support to AWS as required. The OPP is not in a position to comment or speculate on the status of AWS investigations.

In Ontar io, AWS within the Ministry of the Solicitor General is responsible for enforcing the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act. The chief animal welfare inspector and provincial animal welfare inspectors, including inspectors with specialized expertise in livestock, zoos, aquariums, and equines, provide enforcement across Ontario. They carry out inspections, respond to concerns, conduct investigations, as well as provide outreach and education on animal care best practices.

Abuse and neglect of any animal is not tolerated in Ontario. If you think an animal is in distress or is being abused, call 1-833-9-ANIMAL (264625).

Media inquiries relating to AWS investigations should be directed to the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

The Peterborough County OPP is aware of a planned peaceful demonstration regarding these allegations. The OPP respects the right of everyone to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and also recognizes the rights of the general pub lic, local residents and businesses to a safe environment. The OPP will act to preserve the peace and maintain public safety in accordance with legislated responsibilities and in the best interests of all involved.
