Emergency Services Respond to Oil Spill in Cobourg

In Local, Police Blotter

Cobourg’s emergency services responded to a oil spill on Deplama Drive at approximately 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2022.

A transport truck making a delivery to Home Depot hit a curb and raptured its oil pan. When the transport went to leave the property, the oil spilled onto DePalma Road.

Cobourg Fire Department along with Cobourg Police and Works crews blocked off an area of Depalma Drive west of Strathy Road while clean-up took place.

Due to the heavy rain, the oil went into the storm sewer and out to the storm water pond on Strathy Road, under the water tower. Based on the size of the truck, it is estimated that 38 to 42 litres of oil was spilled.

The Town of Cobourg contact the Ministry of Environment (MOE). GFL and Town of Cobourg staff are cleaning up the spill, attending to the storm sewer, parking lot and roadways, as advised by our local MOE Officer. The trucking company is also in contact with GFL regarding cleanup efforts and is in continued communication with the Town of Cobourg.

Booms in place are containing the spill and there are no concerns for further runoff.
