Ontario invests $7,022,744 into clean and environmentally-friendly infrastructure, providing jobs for our community while working towards a sustainable future.
Investments in key infrastructure projects build strong and healthy communities across Canada. From roads and community centres – to public transit and water and wastewater systems – reliable infrastructure provides communities with opportunities to grow and develop today so that they can be resilient in the face of tomorrow.
On April 29, 2022, David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South announced $7,022,744 in provincial funding for seven projects in our community to improve drinking water infrastructure.
“I’m thrilled that our government is making this crucial and much-needed investment across Northumberland-Peterborough South,” said MPP Piccini. “We’re ensuring our residents have clean drinking water, while providing good jobs and paycheques for our residents.”
“I am very pleased to announce that federal approval has been secured for these vital projects,” said Phillip Lawrence, MP for Northumberland-Peterborough South. “Government works when we work together, and it was a privilege to have worked with our dedicated councillors, mayors, and MPP to advocate for this funding in our community.”
The provincial funding breaks down as follows:
· $978,363 for the replacement of a undersized and severely corroded transition watermain in Brighton.
· $1,370,279 for the replacement of a street standpipe for a new elevated tank in Port Hope.
· $402,852 to replace the water distribution system in Crystal Springs.
· $384,952 to install and upgrade point of entry systems for 14 houses in Hiawatha First Nations.
· $689,287 to install a second watermain under the Trent River, to improve water pressure and to improve fire protection in Trent Hills.
· $572,942 to replace and upgrade a well in Alnwick-Haldimand.
· $961,762 to improve drinking water reservoirs in Asphodel-Norwood.
· $1,662,377 to replace an elevated tank in Cobourg.
“This grant is vital to the growth and sustainability of our community,” said Brian Ostrander, Mayor of Brighton. “The funds provided will help Brighton replace a significant portion of very old water main that feeds one of the fastest growing areas of our community. We appreciate the support of our federal and provincial partners in helping to keep Brighton and our citizens safe and healthy for years to come.”
“This Federal and Provincial government investment of $3.6M to replace Cobourg’s Zone 1 Elevated Tank identified in our Water Master Plan demonstrates the strength of our government partnerships and collaboration, working for the benefit of our Cobourg community,” said John Henderson, Mayor of Cobourg. “It’s a winning outcome for all stakeholders including our ratepayers, local trades, and aids in attracting new commercial businesses to our great Cobourg community.”
“Funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure ‘Green Stream’ program allows the Municipality of Port Hope to acquire a new elevated water tank storage facility,” said Bob Sanderson, Mayor of Port Hope. “Port Hope is growing, and this new water tank storage facility will address future demand and improve water supply security. We are grateful to the federal and provincial governments for their ongoing support of initiatives like this one, which helps our community create efficiencies and provide clean, safe, and reliable drinking water.”
“Alnwick-Haldimand Township Council, Staff, Grafton Water Committee and Residents are very appreciative to the Federal and Provincial Governments for supporting our Green Infrastructure Funding Stream, said Gail Latchford, Mayor of Alnwick-Haldimand. “This project will allow for a more secure and better water supply to the residents of Grafton.”
“The new transmission pipe will provide sufficient flow volumes and provides the safety of redundancy for supply to the south side residents, eliminating any potential interruptions,” said Bob Crate, Mayor of Trent Hills. “The Municipality appreciates the investment by our Provincial and Federal partners in this project that ensures sufficient drinking water capacity for the community now and as it grows with planned and future developments.”
“The Water Master Plan, commissioned by Lakefront Utility Services Inc., and the Cobourg Water and Wastewater Rate Study completed in 2020, reflect the need to replace the existing Victoria Street Elevated Tank that provides 1,360 m3 of water storage in Zone 1. LUSI remains committed to providing reliable services and consistently delivering high-quality drinking water to our customers,” said Dereck Paul, President and CEO. “We are grateful for the help from the Federal Government and Ontario that will allow us to replace the Victoria Street Elevated Tank, supplying our community with updated infrastructure and additional water storage.”

· In March 2021, our government announced an investment of over $1.2 billion to help hospitals recover from financial pressures created and worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that Ontarians can continue to access the care they need and deserve
· This includes $572.3 million to reimburse hospitals for the loss of other forms of revenue such as co-payments for private rooms and the reduction of retail services, all of which contribute to patient care and support clinical services.
