Northumberland County Gets Representation on Nuclear Body

In City Hall

Northumberland County representation on the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities already includes Port Hope Mayor Bob Sanderson.

After the April county council meeting, it will also include Cobourg Mayor John Henderson, who won council approval as the county’s political representative – Chief Administrative Officer Jennifer Moore and Paramedics Chief Susan Brown will be the county staff representative and designate respectively.

When the request for a political representative came before council, Sanderson – whose community is home to the Cameco Corporation – advised his colleagues that he is already co-chair of that association.

Noting that there is also a nuclear industry in Cobourg, Deputy Warden Mandy Martin nominated Henderson – at which point he said that he does have some relevant background from his days as an educator at the Durham District School Board. For more than 20 years during that time, he represented the school board’s interests on a similar body with the Darlington and Pickering nuclear industries.

“I would be happy to join my colleague councillor Sanderson and learn more along the way,” he said.

Giving a brief outline of time commitments, Sanderson said there is an annual meeting in Ottawa in February, with plans to organize a second Zoom meeting each year as well.
He characterized the group as a consulting group for the nuclear industry.
