Municipality of Brighton Receives Grant from Enabling Accessibility Fund

In Community, Local

The Municipality of Brighton strives to be accessible for all.

The Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) provides funding for projects that make Canadian communities and workplaces more accessible for persons with disabilities. EAF aims to create
more opportunities for persons with disabilities to:

• take part in community activities, programs, and services, or

• access employment

The Municipality of Brighton has received $18,472 for the retrofit of one exterior door which has become the primary service entrance at the municipal building during the COVID-19 pandemic
as it currently does not meet AODA standards. This will enhance our service delivery to appropriately accommodate individuals with disabilities. The funding will also improve navigation
inside the building for individuals with disabilities by adding accessible door operators on two doors located in a high traffic area of the building. These two doors are also included in the
municipality’s plans for physical distancing management procedures during the pandemic. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund.

Mayor Brian Ostrander understands how the pandemic has played an even bigger role in accessible communities:
“As a result of the pandemic the Municipality made changes to building access at 35 Alice Street, to help with social distancing protocols and keep Library staff, municipal staff and the public
safe. Unfortunately, the door that accesses municipal services, from Dundas Street, does not meet accessibility requirements. The Municipality is extremely pleased to receive this grant
from our Provincial partners that will help us make accessing the Municipal Centre easier for the citizens of Brighton.”
