Making Sure Every Senior In A Long-Term Care Home Locally Enjoys Christmas

Every senior at a long-term care home in Port Hope and Cobourg will have a stocking for Christmas thanks to the efforts of the community and Vicky Davis.

Davis is the organizer of Stuff A Stocking for a Senior in Northumberland.

Six years ago Davis and her husband made a stocking stuffed with items for a man and woman at a Orangeville seniors home.

“On our way home I told my husband that we needed to do that here.”

Davis’ mother was in a long-term care home and when she would visit her, there were two women that no one would ever visit.

Even on Christmas Day when Davis was visiting her mother, no one came to see the two women.

The nurses did their best, but it’s expensive buying items.

“So I decided to start the program and put it out to our community.

On Tuesday, December 14, 2021 Davis sorted out items for 425 seniors in the Cobourg and Port Hope area.

“As you can see we have donations, donations, donations.”

“On Christmas morning they realize that Santa hasn’t forgotten them and they have a nice smile on their face.”

Past years Stuff a Stocking for a Senior in Northumberland has done 700 stockings, but another group is helping out this year.

Soap, shampoo, hand cream, Kleenex, ornaments, stuffed animals, deodorant, snacks and lots of chocolate fills each stocking.

“The nurses send me pictures and it makes my entire day knowing that all of these people have big smiles on their faces and are opening these stockings.”

Another group called Helping Hands got in touch with Davis and asked about making lap quilts for the seniors to keep them “toasty warm.”

“We couldn’t do this without out community. The schools, individuals, businesses and services groups. The Rose Quest in Port Hope donated a bunch of boxes of soap and band-aids.” “Everybody in this community comes together and I don’t want to live anywhere else.”
