The Northumberland region will be well represented at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association cross-country running championships Nov. 6 at Lakefield College School.

Athletes competed at the Central Ontario Secondary School Athletics meet this past Wednesday at Dunnett Orchards in Brighton, with the top two teams and five fastest individuals in each division earning a berth at the provincial championships.

Team scores are determined by the placings of each school’s top four runners with the aim to get the lowest score possible. The five individuals qualify for OFSAA are the top runners not on a qualifying team.

Just as they were the previous week at the Bay of Quinte championships, Brighton’s East Northumberland Secondary School was the overall COSSA champion based on the results of all of their runners and is sending two teams and two individuals to the OFSAA meet.

Cobourg Collegiate Institute also qualified one team and two individuals for the provincial championships. Campbellford District High School will also have a representative as Carson Campbell won the junior boys race. Emily Goodall, a novice runner, will represent Cobourg’s St. Mary Catholic Secondary School after she previously narrowly missed qualifying.

Port Hope High School athletes also had great runs at the COSSA meet.

ENSS won the senior boys race on the strength of four runners finishing within places 10 to 20. They were on the only team in any division to qualifying for OFSAA without a runner finishing below 10th place.

Braden Geens was the first ENSS senior boy to cross the finish line with a 10th place finish in 21 minutes 18 seconds. Geens was followed by Owen Williams in 14th (21:48), Ethan Rivard 16th (22:07) and Michael Patrick 20th (22:28) for a four-person team total of 60 ahead of Bayside Secondary School which had 67 points, including two runners in the top five.

Josh Warner also ran a strong senior boys race, placing 23rd in a time of 22:34.

ENSS’s junior boys also won its division with 43 points, led by Aidan Molenhuis in third place (18:21), Carter Geens sixth (18:36.00), Dominic Noreau eighth (19:05) and Logan Rivard 26th (24:51). Teammate Owen Turner wasn’t far behind in 28th (26:36).

St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School from Belleville was second with 54 points.

Carson Campbell, from Campbellford District High School, won the junior boys race in 17:37 to clinch his OFSAA berth as an individual.

Qualifying as individuals for ENSS were Ethan Miklos and Braeden Lay in the novice boys race. Miklos was ninth in 14:21 and the third individual and Lay was 12th in 15:10 and the fifth individual qualifying time.

William Urbach from Cobourg Collegiate Institute also qualified as an individual in that novice boys race. He was the second-fastest individual and seventh overall with a time of 14:14.

CCI qualified a team in the junior girls division, which was won by Peterborough’s St. Peter Catholic Seconary School with 37 points. CCI narrowly finished second with 38 points, led by Sophie Harold in second (19:26), Ella Buzminski ninth (22:26), Rachel Cranston 11th (22:40) and Jaeden Holden 16th (23:08).

St. Mary’s Natalie Cerna placed 14th (22:53), just three spots shy of qualifying as an individual.

In the novice girls race, St. Mary’s Emily Goodall placed 11th overall in 17:16, which was the seventh fastest time for an individual and two spots out of qualifying for the OFSAA championships. Two qualifying athletes have withdrawn from moving on, though, and it was announced Saturday that Goodall will now compete at the provincial meet.

CCI’s Hilary Johnson qualified as an individual runner in the senior girls race. She placed fifth overall (25:09) and was the second individual to advance to the OFSAA meet.

Below are the results of the qualifying teams and individuals as well as athletes from local schools.
