Cobourg Woman “Floored” By Response From People After Tenant Loses Everything In Weekend Fire

In Community, Editor Choice, Local

A Cobourg woman has stepped up to help a man who lost everything over the weekend in an apartment fire.

Corey Evans lives across from 45 Spencer Street East where fire crews were called on Saturday just after 6 p.m.

Fire crews extinguished the fire quickly. Although the fire was confined to the bedroom the contents of the apartment were destroyed from smoke.

The tenant was at work when fire crews were called to his apartment.

No other units were damaged and tenants were allowed back into their apartments around 9 p.m.

Evans said the man’s name is David and, “he lost everything that he had that he worked hard to get.”

On top of that he had no content insurance.

David has several disabilities, but has a part-time job he was at when the fire started.

“After watching the fire department deal with this, I felt I had to do something for him.”

Through her Facebook page, “Out and About in Northumberland County” which has nearly 2,900 followers she put the word out about helping David.

“Since Saturday I cannot tell you how many people have stepped up and want to help.”

In fact, Evans was given a garage for donations and went to see it on Monday.

The owner doesn’t want any money, but it’s somewhere for items to be stored for David.

On top of the generous donation, the owner of the garage gave a number of clothes and $200.

At this point, furniture seems to be covered, but Evans stated several small items that would be appreciated including towels, food cards, curtains, fans, and a coffee pot to name a few of the items.

Evans lists the items needed on the interview.

Since the word has spread about the need for items, Evans has been overwhelmed with the response.

“I always knew Northumberland County and Cobourg area residents are giving, but I have never in my life seen so people who want to help. I am just floored. The response has been incredible.”

For those who wish to help, contact Corey Evans at e-mail hairdresser64@hotmail.ca or text at 905-269-2416.
A donation box is located at TopCuts Salon located at 975 Elgin Street West in the Victoria Place Plaza in Cobourg.
