GRCA Launches “Community Stories – Sharing Our Watershed History”

In Community, Upcoming Events

Did you know that the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority is one of the oldest conservation authorities in Ontario, established in 1946? Do you recall when the Ganaraska Forest was being planted in the late 1940s?

Did you experience past floods and Hurricane Hazel in 1954? Maybe you have memories from a past school trip? The GRCA wants to hear your stories!

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the GRCA, a citizen science initiative has been launched in order to collect stories and the history of local watersheds from communities. Topics of interest could include the watershed and environmental conditions during the 20th century, notable droughts and floods, including the 1980 Port Hope flood.

Were the Ganaraska Forest and GRCA Conservation Areas places that you visited in the 1990s? What is your experience with recent changes in weather in the 2000s?

What do you remember?

The GRCA has created a web-based application that is engaging and easy to use. This will allow the community to share memories, stories, pictures and documents of historical environmental conditions and events that occurred in our local watersheds. This historical information will be used to communicate the importance of watershed management including restoration and stewardship.

The Community Stories initiative can be located on the GRCA website at grca.on.ca

This project has been graciously funded by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF).
