Update – Cobourg Police – Joint Forces Traffic Safety Initiative

On the 27th of July, 2021, between 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm, the Cobourg Police Service hosted a Joint Forces
Traffic Safety Initiative in relation to our Police Service’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (S.T.E.P.), which
included Enforcement Agencies in attendance from the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Environment,
Ontario Provincial Police (Northumberland Detachment) and Cobourg Police Service.

For the month of July, our Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (S.T.E.P.) focuses on increased community
education and enforcement, targeting illegal modifications to vehicles, unnecessary noise violations, and
speeding.


Here are the Joint Forces Traffic Safety Initiative results:

22 Inspections;

4 Repair Verifications ordered;

8 Warnings, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act;

7 Provincial Offences Notices (Part I Offences), contrary to the Environmental Protection Act;

3 Fail Emissions, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act;

12 Provincial Offences Notices (Part I Offences), contrary to the Highway Traffic Act;

30 Cautions, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act; and

4 motor vehicles removed from roadway for Unfit, towed at owners expense.

Charges related are, Improper Muffler, No Muffler, Defective Braking System, No Front Plate, Drive with
Improper Headlight (Blue Lights Forward) and Speeding. Fines are contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and
Environmental Protection Act, ranging from $65.00 to $2000.00, some include demerit points.

Ensure your vehicle stays in good working condition by performing schedule engine maintenance, ensuring
that your motor vehicle safety equipment and exterior lights are in good working order.

The Cobourg Police Service would like to remind motorists to be patient with other road users and plan your
route, leaving plenty of time to get to your destination safely.
