The West Northumberland Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee reports 400 local residents without family physicians, Deputy Mayor Suzanne Seguin said at council this week.

Reporting from the committee’s recent meeting, she noted that these individuals are registered with Health Care Connect, “and will be first in line as new doctors are hired and take on patients.

“There is a lot of competition out there, and a lot of communities out there are offering quite a lot of incentives, but we do what we can with our budget,” Seguin said.

As Cobourg represents 32.2% of the West Northumberland population, she added, they provide that proportion of the committee’s budget. This means the town supports the committee to the tune of $17,065 annually, and there’s no reason to anticipate it will change.
