SIU Investigating Collision on Highway 401 in the Municipality of Port Hope

In Local, Police Blotter

The Special Investigations Unit was called after one person was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre early Thursday morning on Highway 401 in the Municipality of Port Hope.

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to a vehicle fire on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 approximately one kilometre east of Wesleyville at 2:44 a.m.

When fire crews arrived the vehicle was engulfed in flames on the eastbound shoulder of the highway and the occupants were uninjured.

Approximately an hour after while emergency crews were still on scene a transport truck rear ended a vehicle in the passing lane of the highway as it had slowed to go through the scene.

The lone occupant of the vehicle was transported to Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg where the driver was later airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

SIU attended the scene of the collision along with members of the OPP Technical Collision Investigators.
