Vaccinations locally are a real success story, Mayor John Henderson said at this week’s Cobourg council meeting.

The biggest news is the result of Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini working with the Ontario Health Team-Northumberland and Northumberland Hills Hospital on a pilot project to field mobile vaccination clinics with the help of an extra 2,000 doses.

“They will work with manufacturers, restaurants such as Tim Hortons and McDonalds, and grocery stores to ensure those who have not had the opportunity to get vaccinations will do so,” Henderson said.

“If it is successful, they will use this as a pilot and get it into other municipalities.”

Not only does the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit report that 64.6% of the population has at least one shot, Henderson continued – 59.1% of kids aged 12 to 17 can say the same, “which is exceptional for a community our size.

“And there are three dates set aside at the Cobourg Community Centre just for youth, which is a great-news story.”

He thanked Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Ward for bringing in rapid antigen COVID-19 tests for businesses with 150 or fewer employees.

“At least 18 industries are taking advantage of these free kits to help with testing asymptomatic individuals.”
