Durham Police – Male Charged with Manslaughter for Trafficking Fentanyl

In Police Blotter

Investigators have charged a 19-year-old male with manslaughter from an overdose investigation in Brooklin.

Members from Central West Division attended a Brooklin address, in the area of Carnwith Drive and Baldwin Street North, in response to an overdose death of an 18-year-old male.  It was determined through an investigation that the victim had recently purchased fentanyl, ingested the substance and subsequently died.

The Major Crime Homicide Unit assisted the Central West Criminal Investigations Bureau with this investigation and on March 19, 2021, Jacob NORN, age 19 of Brooklin, was arrested and charged with Trafficking Fentanyl and Possession of a Controlled Substance x 5.

The Center of Forensic Sciences conducted a post mortem and it was determined that the cause of death was due to a fentanyl overdose.  As a result of this finding, the accused, Jacob NORN, was arrested and on today’s date, was charged with Manslaughter. He was held for a bail hearing

If members of the public have any information regarding this matter, they can contact Det. Graham of the Major Crime – Homicide Unit at ext. 5418 or D/Cst Bortoluss of the Central West Criminal Investigations Bureau at ext. 3841.

Between January and March, DRPS has already conducted 37 sudden death investigations where a drug overdose is suspected, and 5 have returned as opioid related.  This is almost double compared to the 19 sudden death investigations during same time frame in 2020.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
