Below is a statement from Port Hope Mayor Bob Sanderson regarding a story that appeared in a Toronto newspaper bringing unwanted attention to a local story. The story originally was written in local media, but when it was put in a Toronto newspaper gathered a much larger audience and more unwanted attention to the area about downtown Port Hope.
“I appreciate the input that residents have provided regarding the Ganny Weekend promotion and I would like to address some of those concerns. I would also like to assure everyone that our first priority is the health and safety of all our residents.
To be clear, there was not, nor was there ever, an ‘event’ organized or supported by the Municipality. We are not inviting tourists to our community and we are not encouraging people to gather in groups while the pandemic remains a grave concern.
In addition, and given the recent announcement from the Provincial government to impose an Emergency Brake across Ontario, we have also cancelled all local promotions related to the weekend.
We take this opportunity to remind everyone that we must continue to practice physical distancing where needed. We must also limit our interactions with people who do not live at the same address, even if they are “family” or close friends.
