Quinte West OPP – Person Charged After Failing to Stop for Police

The Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has laid multiple charges following an incident on Wednesday.


On March 10, 2021, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Quinte West OPP was notified by Belleville Police Service that they were strategically following a vehicle southbound on Stockdale Road after it allegedly failed to stop for them in the City of Belleville. Quinte West OPP successfully deployed a tire deflation device (spike belt) at Stockdale Road and County Road 33, however police disengaged with the vehicle due to a high risk to public safety.


At approximately 9:45 p.m., police located the vehicle on Spring Street in Trenton. Quinte West OPP and Belleville Police Service set up containment in the area, and with the assistance of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and OPP Canine Unit, the suspect was tracked to a residence on King Street where they were located and arrested.
Cody LAIRD, 29 years old of Quinte West has been charged with the following offences in relation to this incident:
Flight from peace officer;
Dangerous operation;
Fail to comply with probation order – two counts; and
Fail to comply with release order


The accused was further arrested in relation to a previous incident and on two outstanding arrest warrants. They were charged with the following additional offences:
Assault – two counts;
Uttering threats – to cause death or bodily harm;
Fail to comply with probation – six counts; and
Fail to comply with a release order


The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear for bail at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on March 12, 2021.
