Northumberland County Council – Boy Scout Camp is Now Vacant

In City Hall

Known by many as the Boy Scout Camp, the gently hilled site on County Road 45 north of Cobourg will need a new tenant.

Bylaw 06-2021 – passed by Northumberland County council at its February meeting – repeals Bylaw 2020-58, the lease agreement on the land on County Road 45 north of Cobourg between the county and the Boy Scouts Canada Provincial Council for Ontario.

The Boy Scout Camp dates back decades to when the organization leased the land – property that had formerly been the Northumberland Ski Club – as a camp and recreational property.

Alnwick-Haldimand Township Councillor Gail Latchford noted that this organization typically leased for five-year periods. Given the one-year timeline, she wondered if future lease terms will be for one- instead of five-year periods.

Director of Corporate Services Lisa Ainsworth said the plan had been for a one-year lease. However, following an organizational review by the lessor and the continued pandemic, they felt that continuing the lease was no longer a viable option.
