Snowy Owl Attracting Photographers to Cobourg Harbour

A snowy owl has taken up residence around Cobourg harbour for the last several weeks.

The owl has been photographed in many places in and around the harbour.

On Tuesday, February 9, 2021, the snowy owl stayed mainly on lighthouses until late afternoon when it flew to a pole at the boat compound.

There are approximately 300,000 snowy owls worldwide and during the winter months they spend their time inhabiting marshes, fields and prairies of Canada including South Ontario, and obviously Cobourg.

There is speculation it is the same snowy owl that has come to know Cobourg as a winter home for the last several years.

Although most owls sleep during the day and hunt at night, the snowy owl (can) be active during the day, but tend to be most active at dawn and dusk.

For anyone so inclined to take photos in Cobourg of the snowy owl, two words of advice after spending several hours at the harbour – be patient.

After spending several hours at the Cobourg Harbour trying to get photos of the snowy owl, there are two pieces of advice that may help for anyone planning on getting photos – dress warm and have patience.
