Cobourg Council – Transit Will Go to Cash Fares – For Now

In City Hall

Cobourg Transit will resume normal operating hours Jan. 26 with a $2 fare, council voted on Monday.

This $2 fare is slightly more than users typically pay, Councillor Brian Darling allowed, but many municipalities are doing the same thing – going to a convenient toonie fare for the time being, until contactless on-line sales can be established and in-person sales can be undertaken when Victoria Hall reopens.

Darling suggests users think of all the free transit they have enjoyed since transit fares were cancelled once the COVID-19 emergency was declared.

“We are one of the only municipalities that have remained free since the pandemic started,” he said.

Darling also had news for holders of transit passes that would have expired in February or March 2020. No refunds are available, he said, but these passes will be considered valid until February or March 2021.

The same motion provided for the reimplementation of parking-fee collection, as well as by-law enforcement of parking meters and parking lots, once the provincial lockdown has been lifted.
