Cobourg Council – Cobourg Finalizes Indigenous Land Acknowledgement

In City Hall

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Cobourg council has approved its Indigenous land acknowledgment at this week’s meeting.

“We respectfully acknowledge that we are located in the traditional and treaty territory of the Michi Saagiig (Mississauga) and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations which include Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoleil and Georgina Island First Nations,” it says.

“We respectfully acknowledge that the Williams Treaties First Nations have been stewards and caretaker of these lands and waters, and that today remain vigilant over their health and integrity for generations to come. We are all Treaty people.”

This statement of acknowledgment will be incorporated in all council-related meetings, meetings of all local boards and advisory-committee meetings and all public meetings. The first time this will happen will be Jan. 4, at the next committee-of-the-whole council meeting.

The motion also requires municipal staff, council members and volunteers to attend Indigenous Awareness and Understanding Training to be provided by the town.

A further provision directs staff to “incorporate appropriate actions from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.”
